WebP to JPG or PNG Converter

Save WebP images as JPGs or PNGs that every app, form and printer accepts. PNG keeps transparency; JPG gets the background colour you choose.

Turn WebP images into JPG or PNG

WebP is the format most websites use for their pictures, so an image you save from a page often arrives as .webp. Plenty of places still refuse it: older photo editors, print shops, job portals and government forms. This converter turns WebP files into JPGs or PNGs that every app accepts, one at a time or as a batch in a ZIP. Choose JPG for photos and PNG to keep a transparent background. Each file keeps the width and height of its WebP. Everything happens in this browser tab, and nothing is uploaded.

Renaming .webp to .jpg is not converting

Changing the file extension only changes the name. The picture inside is still stored as WebP, so a form that checks the file itself still rejects it, and some apps refuse to open it. Converting decodes the WebP and saves the picture again as a real JPG or PNG.

JPG or PNG: what the same WebP turns into

On 30 October 2026, in Microsoft Edge 156, we saved our 12-megapixel test photo as a WebP of the kind a website serves, and converted it back three ways:

FileSize
WebP, 4032 × 30241.7 MB
As JPG, quality 90 (the default)3.0 MB
As JPG, quality 801.6 MB
As PNG22.1 MB

WebP squeezes a photo harder than JPG can at the same quality. Converting cannot bring back detail the WebP already dropped, so the new file never looks better than the WebP. At quality 80 the JPG was about the size of the WebP. For a form with a size limit, start at 80. If it is still too big, run the JPG through Compress JPG, which can aim at a size in KB.

The PNG was 13 times the size of the WebP and looked no different. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which suits flat colour and sharp edges, not photographs. So keep PNG for logos, icons and screenshots: our 1280 × 736 screenshot was 112 KB as a PNG.

Transparent WebP: PNG keeps it, JPG fills it

Logos, stickers and product cut-outs are often WebP with a clear background. PNG keeps that transparency, including the half-clear pixels that give a logo its smooth edge. In our test a green circle on a clear background went from PNG to WebP and back to PNG. The corners stayed fully clear and the middle fully solid.

JPG has no transparency, so something has to fill those areas. When you choose JPG, the tool spots transparent files as you add them and asks for a colour: white, black, or any other from the picker. In our test the same circle came out with pure white corners, or pure black ones with black chosen. Pick the colour of the page or slide the image will sit on.

Animated WebP

A WebP can hold an animation, like a GIF. JPG and PNG files from this tool hold one picture, so you get the first frame. Animated files are marked on their card before you convert. We checked this with a 400 × 400 animated WebP: it was recognised as animated, and the output was a single still frame.

Frequently asked questions

Why do images I save from websites come out as WebP?

Most large websites now send pictures as WebP, because it is smaller than JPG at the same quality. When you right-click and save the image, the browser saves the file it was given, so you get a .webp. Renaming it to .jpg or .png does not convert it: the inside is still WebP, and apps that check will refuse it.

Should I convert WebP to JPG or to PNG?

JPG for photos, PNG for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with a transparent background. Our 1.7 MB WebP photo became a 1.6 MB JPG at quality 80, but a 22.1 MB PNG. A logo, on the other hand, keeps its clear background only as PNG.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?

Usually, at the same quality setting. In our test a 1.7 MB WebP photo became a 3.0 MB JPG at quality 90 and a 1.6 MB JPG at quality 80. If the size matters, use 80: the WebP has already thrown away the fine detail that the extra bytes at 90 would keep.

Does a transparent background stay transparent?

As PNG, yes: every level of transparency comes through, including the soft half-clear edge around a logo. As JPG, no: JPG cannot be see-through, so the clear areas are filled with white, black or any colour you pick.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Only to a still picture: JPG and PNG from this tool hold one frame, so you get the animation's first frame. The tool marks animated files before you convert, so it is never a surprise.
