Watch the network while you work
A cloud-based tool has to send your file somewhere to process it, and that transfer is impossible to hide from your own browser. Here is how to see it:

Press F12to open your browser's developer tools, then choose the Network tab.

Set the filter to Fetch/XHR so you are only watching data requests, not images and scripts.

Pick any tool, add a large file, and run it. The bigger the file, the more obvious an upload would be.

Read the log. A cloud tool shows a POST or PUT carrying megabytes to a remote host. Piqav shows no file transfer at all - the work happens on your processor.
This works on any file tool, not just ours. It is worth running on whatever you currently use. What we saw when we ran it on eight of our own tools is in why browser-based PDF tools are safer.
What Piqav won't do
Processing locally has real trade-offs. These are the honest limits:
- It can't recover a lost password.Unlocking a PDF requires the correct password. There is no brute-force cracking here, by design.
- It can't sync between devices.Nothing is stored on a server, so there is no file history and no cross-device access. Closing the tab clears everything.
- Very large files depend on your hardware.Processing uses your own memory and processor. A several-hundred-megabyte document will strain an older machine in a way a server farm would not.
- It won't make a scan searchable on its own.A scanned page is an image. Text only becomes selectable after running it through OCR.

File conversion & compression
Turn PDF pages into JPG or PNG at 72, 150 or 300 DPI, or photos and screenshots into a PDF. Phone photos come out the right way up: we checked all eight EXIF orientations.
In our benchmark of 102 real PDFs, scanned documents typically shrank by about 46%, and the best result was 93%. Compression redraws pages as images, so it suits scans far better than typed documents.
PDF editing & annotation

What we found testing our own tools
Each of these comes from running the tools on real files. The method and every number are in the linked post.
Compression
We ran 102 real PDFs through Compress PDF. Scans typically shrank by about 46%, and 29 files could not be made smaller at all.

We hid one account number five different ways and copied the text back out. Three of the five leaked it.

A PDF locked with only a permissions password opened and copied freely, and a four-digit open password fell in 13 minutes.

Yes. Every tool is free, with no account, no subscription and no daily limit on how many files you process; the site is paid for by advertising. The one size limit is on Compress PDF, which accepts files up to 100 MB each. The other tools are limited only by the memory your device can give the browser.
The processing happens in your web browser, on your device, so your files are never uploaded to our servers. Some tools download their processing code from a public CDN the first time you use them, and the page runs Google's ad and analytics scripts. None of those receive your files: we checked by recording every network request while eight of the tools processed real files, and the results are in our blog post on why browser-based PDF tools are safer.
Open your browser's developer tools with F12, go to the Network tab, then use any tool on a file. You will see the page load its own code and the PDF renderer, and on most visits the ad scripts, but no request that carries your file. When we recorded every request while merging and while converting PDF to Word on 8 October 2026, none of them sent any data.
No. Protect PDF and Unlock PDF run qpdf, compiled to WebAssembly, in a background thread of your browser tab. The password is used there and nowhere else, the file is encrypted or decrypted in memory, and the result is handed straight back as a download. Close the tab and both are gone from memory.
The first time you recognise text in a language - in OCR PDF, or with the OCR option in PDF to Word or PDF to Excel - the page downloads the recognition engine and that language's data from a public code library. For Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Tamil it also loads a font for the text layer from this site. Those are downloads to you; your pages are read in your browser and nothing about your document goes the other way.
Yes, if you know the password. Compress PDF, Merge PDF, Split PDF and PDF to PNG ask for it and unlock the file in your browser; neither the password nor the file is sent anywhere. The result is saved without a password, so add one again with Protect PDF if it needs one. If the password is forgotten, no tool here can open the file: Piqav does not try to guess passwords.
No. No tool adds a watermark, logo or text of its own to your file. The only mark you will ever see is one you add yourself with Watermark PDF.
Yes. New tools are added as people ask for them, and each one works the same way: free, and processed in your browser. If there is a tool you need, the contact page is the way to ask for it.

Compress PDF accepts files up to 100 MB each; the other tools are limited by the memory your browser can use, so very large files are easier on a computer than on a phone.
No. Piqav runs in your web browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create: open the tool you need and add your file.
Yes. The site works on phones, tablets and computers with a current version of Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge; older browsers are not supported. Because your device does the work, very large documents are quicker and more reliable on a computer.
Yes. Piqav runs in your browser rather than as an installed program, so the operating system does not matter and there is nothing to install or update. What matters for very large files is memory, which a computer usually has more of than a phone or a low-end Chromebook.
Not completely. You need a connection to open a page, and each tool loads its working code when you first use it; text recognition also downloads its language data then. Once that has loaded, the processing itself runs on your device, and your files are not sent anywhere.
